Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery

Minimally invasive surgery, fixes a hernia (when tissue bulges through a weak muscle wall) using small incisions, a camera (laparoscope), and special tools, often with a mesh patch, under general anesthesia, allowing for quicker recovery, less pain, and smaller scars compared to traditional open surgery.

What is Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery?

Laparoscopic hernia surgery, or keyhole surgery, fixes a hernia through tiny cuts using a camera (laparoscope) and instruments, avoiding large incisions for less pain, faster recovery, and smaller scars. Procedures involve inflating the abdomen with gas, pushing tissue back, covering the weak spot with mesh, and then closing the small cuts, with common types being TAPP and TEP, offering benefits like quicker return to normal activity and lower infection risk compared to traditional open surgery.

Evaluation

Assessment

Whether you’ve noticed a subtle swelling or a persistent, uncomfortable bulge in your groin, abdomen or chest, a hernia can be difficult to ignore. It can make everyday movements — such as bending, lifting or walking — more challenging. While hernias are rarely dangerous, they tend to worsen over time and will not resolve on their own. Hernia surgery is often the most effective solution.

To determine the best treatment for your hernia, we begin with a thorough assessment. This includes a physical examination and a review of your medical history. In some cases, imaging tests such as an ultrasound, CT scan or MRI may be necessary to get a clearer picture of the hernia and its impact on surrounding tissues.

Based on this evaluation, we will discuss your treatment options with you, including the benefits and risks of laparoscopic hernia surgery compared to traditional open surgery.

What is Hernia?

A hernia occurs when an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weak area of the abdominal wall, causing a visible bulge, discomfort, or pain—especially while coughing, lifting, or standing for long periods.

Why Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery?

Most patients can walk the same day and return home within a short hospital stay.

  • Very small cuts (keyhole surgery)
  • Less pain after surgery.
  • Faster recovery and early return to daily activities.
  • Minimal scarring.
  • Lower risk of infection and recurrence
  • Strong mesh repair for long-term strength
  • Short hospital stay (often day-care or 1-night stay)

How is it done?

At Dr Thakur’s VIVAANTA, we offer advanced laparoscopic (keyhole) hernia surgery, a modern and minimally invasive technique for treating:

No matter how complex your condition, our experts have a proven track record of treating all types of hernias with the best possible long-term results.

Our specialists are here to help you with:

  • Femoral hernias (lower groin)
  • Hiatal hernias (stomach pushing into your chest)
  • Incisional hernias (along an incision)
  • Inguinal hernias (upper groin)
  • Parastomal hernias (around stomas)
  • Recurrent hernias (come back after treatment)
  • Umbilical hernias (navel)
  • Ventral hernias (abdomen)

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia through 2-3 small incisions using a laparoscope and specialized instruments. The hernia is repaired with a mesh patch to strengthen the abdominal wall.

Treatment Options

At Vivaanta

Our laparoscopic hernia repair involves making small incisions through which a camera and surgical instruments are inserted. The surgeon then pushes the protruding tissue back into place and reinforces the weakened area with a mesh patch to provide long-term support. The incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue, resulting in minimal scarring and a quicker recovery compared to traditional open surgery.

Benefits include less pain, faster recovery, smaller scars, and a quicker return to normal activities compared to traditional open surgery.

What To Expect During Abdominal wall reconstruction?

If you have a large or recurrent ventral hernia, you may need abdominal wall reconstruction. This is a highly technical and complex procedure that few surgeons in London have the expertise to perform. We can repair ventral hernias and any related complications in several ways, including:

  • Botulinum toxin (Botox®) injections to relax and stretch the abdominal muscles before surgery
  • Preoperative pneumoperitoneum to gradually inflating the abdomen with air to stretch the abdominal wall
  • Component separation surgically separating and repositioning the layers of the abdominal wall to close large defects
  • Surgical mesh: using specialized mesh materials to reinforce the abdominal wall and provide long-term support
  • Mesh-free repairs using advanced suturing techniques to close the hernia without mesh in selected cases
