What is Gallbladder Surgery?

Gallbladder surgery (also called cholecystectomy) is a procedure to remove the gallbladder — a small pouch under the liver that stores bile and helps in digestion.

When the gallbladder forms stones or gets infected, it starts causing pain and health problems. Removing it is the safest treatment.

Evaluation

Assessment

During your initial visit, we’ll diagnose your symptoms, discuss your health history and decide how soon your gallbladder can be removed. Occasionally, we’ll need to perform an ultrasound or do blood tests to further determine the underlying cause of your gallbladder pain.

If your gallbladder is inflamed or swollen with gallstones, our surgeons may need to wait until it shrinks in size before they can remove it entirely.

Your surgeon will discuss the procedures available for your condition, explain how each one works and go over the risks and benefits. Once you and your surgeon have decided on the best approach, we can arrange your surgery promptly — in some cases, within 24 hours. Prior to the procedure, your care team will ask you to avoid eating, smoking or taking certain medications to help prevent complications.

Why is Gallbladder Surgery Needed?

You may need gallbladder surgery if you have:

  • Gallstones causing pain, especially after eating
  • Infection or swelling of the gallbladder
  • Repeated indigestion, nausea, or vomiting
  • Stones slipping into the bile duct, causing jaundice
  • Gallstone-related pancreatitis
  • Polyps or growths inside the gallbladder

Why are Common Symptoms?

You may need gallbladder surgery if you have:

  • Pain on the right side of the upper abdomen
  • Pain after heavy or oily meals
  • Bloating, gas, and discomfort
  • Fever or vomiting in severe cases

Treatment Options

At Vivaanta

At Vivanta, gallbladder surgery is done using laparoscopic (keyhole) techniques by experienced surgeons.

We use high-definition imaging and gentle tissue handling to reduce blood loss, pain and recovery time. Our approach emphasises patient comfort, short hospital stay, and fast return to daily life.

What To Expect During Gallbladder Removal?

Laparoscopic surgery is our preferred approach as it is minimally invasive and allows for a quicker, smoother recovery. Your surgeon uses a laparoscope (small camera) to guide the removal of your gallbladder through a small incision near your navel. This procedure is carried out under general anaesthesia, so you will not feel any discomfort.

Although much less common, it is sometimes necessary to perform a traditional open surgery — particularly if you have had previous abdominal surgery or if your gallbladder symptoms are more severe. Your surgeon will discuss this possibility with you during your consultation and answer any questions you may have

Preparation for Gallbladder Surgery

Before the surgery, our care team will provide you with specific instructions to ensure you are ready for the procedure. These may include:

  • Do not eat or drink after midnight on the night before surgery.
  • Bring a list of current medications and allergies.
  • Arrange for someone to accompany or drive you home after discharge.
  • Follow any special instructions provided by your surgical team.

Recovery After Gallbladder Surgery

Gallbladder removal usually requires a short hospital stay, often less than one day. Early in your recovery, you will want to rest and avoid strenuous physical activity. Within a few weeks, you should be able to return to work and resume your other daily activities. You may notice only minor changes, such as difficulty digesting fatty foods, which may cause mild stomach upset. Our dietitians can help you adjust your meals to suit your needs.
